Nose: Huge and rich grain, cornbread and roasted sweetcorn from a wood fire, smoked air-dried ham – that mix of sweet and smoky. Almost a sticky BBQ sauce element.
Palate: Again huge, mouth-coating sticky sweetness, pancakes with crunchy bacon and maple syrup. Birch sap. Fruits emerge with pineapples and nectarines in charge.
Finish: Keeps on going. Slowly drying with coffee grounds and steamed milk too.
Comment: A real belter, this could become the benchmark to judge grain from.

Taster
Nose: Surprisingly fatty and round with aromas of barbecued meats, apricot stones, cherry pips, fuzzy peach skin and toasted almonds.
Palate: ily, it immediately coats the mouth with juicy fruits – peach flesh, dried apricots, and a fruit-laden Dundee cake. Thick-cut bacon adds a chunky meatiness, while dry oak tannins and wood spice hold everything together.
Finish: Fat, grainy, meaty and chewy. It leaves a lasting impression.
Comment: A smashing single grain from South Africa. One to sit and chew on during a braai.
Score: 9
