Port Ellen Distillery (Closed 1983)
Lots happening here. A complex and highly unusual expression of Port Ellen.
Signatory Straight from the Cask
Aged 24 Years, Burgundy finish
Nose: Sweet and perfumed, plums followed by smoke and cigar boxes.
Palate: Short sweetness, stewed prunes, then dry note of damped-down bonfire.
Finish: Plums and a faint whiff of peat smoke.
Comment: Lots happening here. A complex and highly unusual expression of Port Ellen.
Nose: Concentrated. Fruit compote, baked fruits, tinned raspberry, cooked plum but with phenolics acting as a counterpoint: tobacco leaf, coal.
Palate: A sweet, winey start then it dries allowing the peat to emerge before relaxing and letting raspberry fruitiness to return. Layered, complex.
Finish: Mellow, winey, a hint of fragrant smoke.
Comment: Audacious but it works. Brilliantly.
