Nose: Grassy, spicy, and peppery at first. Coriander seed and leaves, green bell pepper, and fresh chilli. Softens to honey-roasted parsnips, caramel-chocolate digestive biscuits, and hints of oregano and creamy soft cheese.
Palate: Light-medium. Dates, toffee sauce, thick dark chocolate, ginger wine, and very strong coffee on sponge fingers. A hint of beef and soy sauce. The savoury herbal notes remain but are muted.
Finish: Medium-long. Tannins bring a hop-like bitterness, balanced with caramel.
Comment: Well rounded and sippable.
Score: 8.3
Taster
Nose: Toffee apple, candied pecans, maple syrup, and lots of spices – cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, and clove. Molasses tobacco – the kind smoked in a hookah.
Palate: Medium-full. The aromas transfer to the palate, but are joined by orange segments, macadamia nuts, and manuka honey. A touch of coffee, too. Quite hot without water, though.
Finish: Medium-short. Dries considerably, on red grape.
Comment: Like drinking a dessert. Needs the water, though.
Score: 8.0
